The magnetic susceptibility of pure metallic cerium has been measured over the temperature range 90° to 1057°k. At 293°k the susceptibility is 17.5 ± 0.2 e.m.u. per gramme, and between 90° and 295°k the relation x =0.00588/( T + 42) is followed. The observed temperature variation of susceptibility can be explained on the basis of a change in thermal population of 2 F 5 2 and 2 F 7 2 levels separated by 1340 cm -1 , upon which is superimposed a small temperature-independent paramagnetism.
