An in situ H-detection method was developed for investigating H-uptake from lubricated rubbing contact into bulk steel. H-uptake can be successfully detected and quantified with a semi-quantitative approach. The results indicate that H-uptake can be promoted by EP additives (e. g. ZDDP) or water contamination in PAO base oil at different extents. It provides a potential method for evaluating the capability of oil additives or contaminants in generating/promoting H-uptake.
