A radiological analysis of bones and joints of thalidomide-deformed children yielded evidence of a sensory neuropathic process taking place in the embryo. Evidence from the literature was found to support a hypothesis of “embryonic neuropathy” as the pathogenesis of these birth defects. The hypothesis has been tested using thalidomide in laboratory rabbits, and immature sensory neurons have been found in ganglia related to limb deformities. The hypothesis can be expanded to account for the associated visceral malformations of thalidomide and similar embryopathies.
