Due to their adaptability and quick response times, doubly fed induction machine (DFIM) based variable speed hydropower plants are the future of electricity. Cyber-attacks and the recommended countermeasures under IEC Standard 62433 (2019): Security for Industrial Automation and Control Systems must be considered in the new digitalized power environment. The present research focuses on the impact analysis of various cyber attacks on doubly fed induction machine-based variable speed hydropower plants. Cyber-attacks are injected into both reference signals and sensor signals. False data injection (FDI) and denial of service (DoS) type cyber-attacks are simulated in MATLAB to examine system behavior. The simulation findings show that the system is significantly impacted by various cyber-attack scenarios. Further, the future scopes of cyber security issues concerning hydropower plants are discussed.
