UV illumination of semiconducting single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) results in a substantial increase of the intensity of the first interband transition (S 11 ) followed by dark or IR light induced restoration of the initial intensity. The intensity of the S 11 transition could also be modulated by light-induced reversible conversion of spiropyran molecules attached to SWNTs from the spiro conformation to its merocyanine form. Both surface-located monomeric and end-located aggregated merocyanines were found in UV illuminated spiropyran-SWNT supramolecular conjugates.
