Schwartz (this issue) performs a valuable service for current and future identity re-searchers with his article that describes, organizes, and summarizes current trends in identity research. It places current work in historical perspective and identifies some common threads in what has become a diverse field, especially in the past 20 years. I comment on different sections of his article, and, although I may sound critical at times, I hope that it is understood that these views are intended to be thought provoking rather than negating.
