In the survey of species diversity of ballistoconidiumforming yeasts in the phylosphere in China, a considerable number of strains unable to form ballistoconidia in pure culture have been accumulated. Among them, a group of strains isolated from Tibet were distinguished from the others by forming orange-colored colonies with certain key physiological characters not typical for any of the non ballistoconidium-forming basidiomycetous genera. Sequence analysis of rDNA indicated that these strains represented a novel species located in an isolated clade together with two recently described species Cryptococcus amylolyticus and Cryptococcus armeniacus The new species is described in the present study as Cryptococcus tibetensis sp. nov.
