2,6-Bis(1‘,3‘-diamino-2‘-methylprop-2‘-yl)pyridine is the prototype of a new class of chelating tetrapodal pentadentate ligands which provide a square pyramidal “donor cap” for octahedrally six-coordinate transition metal ions, as evidenced by the crystal structure of the chlorocobalt(III) complex [CoCl(2,6-C5H3N{CMe(CH2NH2)2}2](Cl)(ClO4)·H2O.
