The director orientation of the ferroelectric liquid crystal molecules within a surface-stabilized display is considered to be uniform. Under this simplifying assumption it is possible to calculate analytically the light transmission of the liquid-crystal display as a function of the azimuth angle φ of the director. We find that the transmission τ is a simple rational function of the polarization p=P cos φ, where P is the spontaneous polarization of the ferroelectric molecule. Experimental results confirm the usefulness of the formula.
