Neuroethology, a hybrid discipline straddling the behavioral and neural sciences, grew out of the field of ethology, the biological study of animal behavior. Neuroethology has benefited from the application of new technical and conceptual breakthroughs derived from other subdisciplines of neuroscience; the use of these new approaches has, in turn, produced principles of general significance to the field of neuroscience. Recent studies of immediate-early gene (IEG) induction in relation to birdsong perception are an excellent illustration of this cross-fertilization process.
