An exclusive study for determination of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Ni, Al, Pb, Se, Al) in drinking water of district Patiala, India was carried out. The groundwater quality was evaluated using water samples collected from 100 localities during July 18 to 28, 2012. Heavy metals were analyzed by Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (Graphite Furnace) and Hydride generation system. . Ni and Al levels were found to be elevated in most of the samples which is in agreement with world health organisation (WHO). Cr, Pb, As and Se levels were found to be below the permissible limits of WHO. In water sample no. 64 (Nandpur Keshon), the level of Cd was found (0.006 mg L −1 ) to be above the permissible level (0.005 mg L −1 ). Statistical analysis of the heavy metal contents in groundwater showed asymmetric distribution in the area. High concentrations of Ni and Al warrant to identify and evaluate natural and anthropogenic sources responsible for distribution of heavy metals in groundwater. Moreover, this study may help other regions in understanding the potential threats to their groundwater resources.
