In this paper, the assumptions and methods of economic theory are used to study the behavior of ‘rational teachers’. The results are used as the basis to prove that an increase in the number of students in a class lowers their level of achievement. It is also shown that these results are the foundation of those obtained by Glass and Smith (1978), Glass et al. (1982) and Lippman (1990).
