The apparatus (Figure 1) consisted of a base-excited mass ( kg), helical springs with a total stiffness of N/m, and the friction-contact mechanism. The sliding mass moved in an air track. Motion in the air track was almost friction free, with a nondimensional viscous damping factor equal to 0.0008. This damping is subsequently neglected. The friction-contact mechanism consisted of a pinched-flange structure which was designed for balancing the normal loads on both sliding surfaces.
