Numerical methods were developed for the kinetics of powder reactions when the process involves mixed control by diffusion and a first‐order slow interfacial reaction. Somewhat different methods are required for spherical, cylindrical, or planar particles. Use of suitable dimensionless treatment minimizes the number of relevant parameters, and the number of different cases for mixed control at the outer interface or the inner interface. These numerical solutions were used to establish the limitations of quasi‐steady‐state solutions, and to obtain a criterion to assess when the kinetics deviates significantly from diffusion control; this criterion is related to the value of k r a o /D , where k r is a reaction rate constant, a o is the initial particle size, and D is diffusivity.
