It is shown that in crystals of hexagonal or tetragonal symmetry the nucleation field, H N depends on the orientation of the easy magnetic direction with respect to the c ‐axis. For an easy direction parallel to the c ‐axis H N depends for K 1 > 4 K 2 exclusively on the first anisotropy constant, K 1 , whereas for oblique easy directions the maximum nucleation field for (−) ( K 1 + K d ) = K 2 is governed exclusively by K 2 , and is given by 2 K 2 /M s .
