Children’s nurses are highly skilled in spotting opportunities for improving the care of children and their families. We may ask ourselves questions such as: ‘Surely patients could avoid having to wait in a busy corridor for tests?’, or ‘Is there a better way of getting these parents ready to go home?’ and ‘Is there a better IV connector for that circuit other than this one?’ But often the thought stops there, probably because we feel too busy or ill-equipped to move on to the stage of questioning practice. Perhaps we don’t feel confident enough to risk rocking the status quo.
