A microstructural model is proposed to study the elastic behavior of liquid foam during small distortion. It is assumed that at the reference configuration foam is at the state of uniform prestress (ΔP) equal to the overpressure of the gas trapped in foam and that interfacial surface tension on adjacent liquid films is equal. In this model, the representative microstructural element satisfies the geometrical requirements imposed by the laws of Plateau, i.e., three liquid films meet along an edge at dihedral angles of 120° and four such edges meet at a point at tetrahedral angles of 109°28′16″. A small distortion that satisfies micromechanical equilibrium is applied to the representative element and the shear modulus (μ) is calculated. It is obtained that μΔP = 0.25. This value is close to the value of 0.23 estimated previously from measurements on emulsions (J. Colloid Interface Sci.112, 427, 1986i).
