Computational modeling study demonstrates a quadrature-based conditional moment closure framework for turbulent reacting flows, indicating effective coupling with RANS and LES solvers.
A quadrature-based conditional moment closure (CMC) for turbulent reacting flows is formulated and coupled to a fluid dynamics solver considering both the Reynolds-Average Navier Stokes (RANS) and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) approaches to describe turbulence. The generalized quadrature method of moments (GQMOM) is used to discretize the mixture-fraction space, extending the capability of traditional quadrature-based moment methods by allowing an arbitrarily refined discretization of the mixture-fraction space. The conditional quadrature method of moments is used on top of GQMOM to obtain a reconstruction of the joint mixture-fraction–reaction-progress-variable probability distribution function. The approach was implemented into OpenFOAM leveraging the quadrature algorithms available in the OpenQBMM library. The implementation is first tested considering homogeneous and one-dimensional cases. A two-dimensional confined planar jet system is then considered, where a simple one-step, mixing-sensitive chemical reaction is included to demonstrate the coupling of the quadrature-based CMC approach with RANS and LES fluid solvers.
