Observational study reveals distinct menarcheal and menstrual symptoms in adolescent girls with Vata-dominant Prakruti, indicating Ayurvedic constitutional influences on reproductive health.
Background: Menarche (Rajodarshan) is a breakthrough in a woman's life as it is the start of reproductive ability.Rutuchakra mentioned in Ayurveda can be understood as the menstrual cycle, in which the entire period of 1 month (chandramasa), 28 days, is controlled by bodily Doshas.Rituchakra or menstrual cycle is a cardinal physiological event in a female's existence.A healthy menstrual cycle is essential for reproduction and continuance of the offspring. It seems that the prevalence of dysmenorrhea is increasing in the population; such sufferings would affect fecundity among females.Menstruation is still considered taboo, which has a severe impact on female mental and physical health.Materials and methods: An incidental election of schools and girls from secondary schools in Wardha district, Maharashtra, India were enrolled.Six hundred sixty-five questionnaires were distributed; 365 were answered properly. The girls who had not reached the age of menarche were ruled out, so we had 365 answered questionnaires from schools.Out of 365 girls, 115 were Vata-dominant Prakriti.A preplanned, prearranged questionnaire was made for data collection. The data were gathered on past menstrual history and current status of premenstrual symptoms; a Prakriti case paper was also included to assess and equate Prakriti with menarche.Result: We concluded that there's a direct relationship between Vata-dominant prakruti and the symptoms of menarche and the menstrual cycle. The quality of Vata was well indicated in the majority of the participants.
