Methodological study demonstrates successful adaptation of the Basic Psychological Needs Support questionnaire in physical therapy, indicating readiness for Brazilian clinical measurement.
Purpose Motivation is a cornerstone for behaviour change in physical therapy, but no instruments assessing Basic Psychological Needs (BPN) support are available in Brazil. This study aimed to translate and cross-culturally adapt for Brazilian Portuguese, the Basic Psychological Needs Support in Physical Therapy (BPNS-PT) questionnaire, a 10-item Likert-type tool divided in the three BPN: autonomy, competence and relatedness.Materials and Methods This methodological study followed standardised recommendations, including: initial translation, synthesis, back-translation, and expert committee evaluation. A pre-test with cognitive interviews (N = 30, mean age 53.2 ± 17.5 years) was conducted in two phases to evaluate relevance, comprehensiveness, and comprehensibility. Results The initial translation and synthesis resolved terminology discrepancies. The expert committee finalised a pre-test version, which was approved by the original author. After the first pre-test (n = 14), one item was revised for clarity. The second pre-test (n = 16) resulted in no further changes. Conclusion The Brazilian version of the BPNS-PT is equivalent to the original, easy to understand, and ready for measurement property testing.
