Overall, Mesalazine can influence the intestinal flora composition, and decrease the bacterial richness and diversity. However, very little is known about how it influences the intestinal flora. The intestinal microbiota are strongly implicated in the development and perpetuation of IBD, and the actions of 5-ASA on the intestinal microbiota may have important therapeutic implications. Research to identify organisms targeted by 5-ASA that are important in IBD pathogenesis is therefore required. Declaration of personal and funding interests: None.
