The effect of frequency (megacycle range) on the degradation of addition polymers (polystyrene) is studied. Results give evidence of occurrence of resonance. Optimum frequency for degradation is found to be 1 Mcycle/sec. Cavitation is suppressed at 2 Mcycle/sec. or more, or by irradiation in vacuo . Results show that degradation can be produced by ultrasonic waves in the absence of cavitation.
