A method is described on one‐ dimensional chromatography with four sequential development steps for the separation of carotenoids in plankton and in lake sediments. Quantitative measurements of various carotenoids in cores of sediments from Swiss lakes allow the composition and development of the phytoplankton over the past 150–500 years to be worked out and also show the changing trophic condition of the lakes. a n example from l ake z ürich shows how the change from oligotrophy to eutrophy, as documented by limnological studies, is reflected in the composition and changing concentration of specific carotenoids.
