The title compound, anhydrous sodium (S)-(−)-6-methoxy-α-methyl-2-naphthaleneacetate, [Na(C14H13O3)], has two independent molecules in the asymmetric unit, with structures closely related to that of the monohydrate. The most significant differences between the two molecules are in the O—C—C—C torsion angles, −10.4 (3) and −37.7 (3)°, of the side-chain carboxylate groups.
