The 8th European HIV Drug Resistance Workshop was held in Sorrento, Italy. This year’s conference saw the inclusion of abstracts on drug resistance to pathogens other than HIV: hepatitis, influenza and TB. Some major themes emerged. Several abstracts reported the declining prevalence and incidence of HIV drug resistance in Europe. The potential impact of resistance in minority quasispecies, especially for non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors and CCR5 inhibitors, were discussed in several presentations. The report of a limited low-grade cross-resistance between the first-generation integrase inhibitors (raltegravir and elvitegravir) and the expected second-generation integrase inhibitor 1349572 (Shionogi, Osaka, Japan/GlaxoSmithKline, London, UK) was highlighted. Despite the limited use of CCR5 inhibitors, the value of V3 genotypic sequencing for tropism testing was emphasized in several presentations.
