We have observed reductions of as much as 75% in the current in thin silicon plates measured transverse to the propagation direction of elastic waves in a contiguous plate of PZT. Evidence is given that this is due to trapping of free carriers at the surfaces of the silicon plate. This effect can reduce the gain of surface wave amplifiers at high power.
