Analyses are presented of the airflow over the Colorado Rockies for two days during February 1970. In both cases substantial downslope flow and standing waves were observed as well as clearly defined layers of turbulence. The turbulent layers appeared to bound the upward propagation of the larger scale waves and therefore probably absorbed much of the drag effect of the mountains on the atmosphere.
