This paper describes a programme of modules for training scientists from biological research organizations. It consists of one- and two-day modules on introductory statistics, advanced methods such as residual maximum likelihood estimation and specialized applications such as the analysis of molecular sequence data and mathematical modelling. The philosophy behind the programme is discussed, and the contents of modules are summarized with illustrations of how concepts are explained. An assessment of the effect of the programme and future directions are also considered.
