This article is the second in a series on the Sex and Health Project in East London. The main objective of the project, which was completed in 1996, was to define the needs of service users. It was intended that this information could then be used to design training initiatives to promote sexual health in general practice. This qualitative study examines female patients’ concerns and experiences in relation to a number of sexual health promotion issues. Study findings show that while a number of patients recounted having negative experiences with both nurses and GPs, the attitude and approach of the health professional was perceived as being the most important factor in encouraging women to discuss their sexual health.
