Since the initial descriptions of genetic restrictions in cellular interactions between macrophages and T cells in the guinea pig (Rosenthal and Shevach 1973; reviewed in Rosenthal and Shevach 1976) and between T cells and B cells in the mouse (Kindred and Shreffler 1972; Katz et al. 1973a,b; reviewed in Katz and Benacerraf 1976a), there has been considerable interest, experimentation, and of course debate concerning the biological relevance (or even validity) of the original interpretations of the observations that established the relationship of genes in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) to regulatory control of such interactions. It is fair to state that at present at least two major schools of thought exist concerning this issue.
