Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, is a chronic idiopathic disorder characterised by relapsing and remitting inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract.1 Recent large population-based registry studies in Europe showed that around 8% of patients with IBD are diagnosed before age 18 years.2,3 Over the past three decades, IBD has become a global disease with rising incidence rates, especially in low-income and middle-income countries in Asia, South America, and Africa.
