Recurrent lumbar disk herniations occur in about 10% of primary disk excisions. Symptoms vary according to the etiology of the radiculopathy. Recurrence at the same level, new herniation at another level, missed primary disk fragment, or other pathology may be the cause of recurrent radiculopathy. Thorough evaluation of the patient, assessing the subjective, objective, and secondary gain issues may lead to a more precise diagnosis and therefore to more successful treatment.
