The design, characterization, and utilization of robust metal-based oxidants with large solubility differences between the oxidized and reduced forms are presented. The active oxidants, which are soluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons, precipitate rapidly and quantitatively upon use and then can be easily separated for recharging and reuse. The systems described illustrate an approach to developing environmentally benign oxidation reagents.
