The isotope shifts of ¹⁸⁸Hg, ¹⁸⁶Hg, and ¹⁸⁴Hg in the 2537-{} line have been measured by use of tunable dye laser at the on-line mass separator ISOLDE at CERN. The results are δν(¹⁸⁸Hg-²⁰⁴Hg)=35.8(2) GHz; δν(¹⁸⁶Hg-²⁰⁴Hg)=39.4(2) GHz; and δν(¹⁸⁴Hg-²⁰⁴Hg)=43.1(2) GHz. These data combined with those obtained by β-radiation-detected optical pumping (β-RADOP) on the odd Hg isotopes yield a huge odd-even staggering for ¹⁸⁵Hg of γ=(2δν185/184)δν186/184=13(1) which has to be interpreted as nuclear shape staggering.
