The elastic stiffnesses of a Ni50.4Al single crystal are determined between − 196 to 25 °C both after slow cooling and after quenching from 1500 °C. All elastic stiffnesses except the shear constant C‚ = (C11−C12)/2 decrease after quenching. The last one exhibits an increase and both effects are contributed to the quenched-in vacancies. The effects of structural and supersaturated thermal vacancies on the elastic constants of β2-NiAl are discussed in terms of a model of lattice energy of β-Hume-Rothery phases.
