The concentration and persistence of M. arthritidis in obstructed and unobstructed kidneys of rats after intracardial inoculation has been investigated. Inoculation of 10 8 c.f.u. M. arthritidis , giving a deposit of 10 4 c.f.u./g kidney tissue, depressed the resistance against E. coli so that secondary intravenous inoculation of 10 6 or 10 7 of E. coli would be followed by severe acute pyelonephritis. These doses of E. coli could not provoke inflammation if given without primary mycoplasma inoculation.
