Counts of the brighter field stars are used to derive the color-index frequency distribution of the Ap stars. It is shown that approximately ten percent of all the main sequence stars in the interval -0^19^ (B -V) ^ + 0™20 are peculiar. The ratio of the number of Ap stars to the number of normal stars is a maximum in the interval -0.09 (B -V) ^ 0.00 and declines outside this range. The combined color-index frequency distributions of the Ap and Am stars are compatible with the hypothesis that the Ap and Am stars are that fraction of the field stars which have true rotational velocities less than about 90 km/sec.
