The thermionic work functions of a polycrystalline tungsten ribbon measured under conditions in which the `patch fields' at the surface either dominated the emission or were totally neutralized by the applied field were found to be 4.55 and 4.47 ev (± 0.01). This is in good agreement with the computed value for the average work function of polycrystalline tungsten foil arrived at by Hopkins and Riviere in 1963. Their simplifying generalizations concerning crystallite orientation in foils and ribbons are regarded as inadequate.
