The channel activity of ion-channel-forming compounds, such as 1, was assessed by single ion-current events of planar lipid membranes (see the current–time trace) and, in addition, by fluorescence emission of pyranine in lipid vesicles. These compounds are prepared in two steps from oligo(ethylene glycol) and fatty acids. The modular synthesis of 1 allows simple variations in the head group, the length of the ethylene glycol chain, and the balance between the hydrophobic and hydophilic components.
