The mechanism of the thermal oxidation of polyethylene and polypropylene is discussed, based on the observations concerning the oxidation products. The reactions leading to the active radical and molecular intermediate products are given and the differences in the number and structure of the intermediates formed from the two polymers are pointed out. The solid and volatile products of the oxidation are listed, their relative quantities and the probable formation mechanism of the important products are given.
