Abstarct This paper examines the role specifications for heads of mathematics departments in schools as revealed in further information for candidates provided by headteachers after the authors’ sampling of 100 advertisements in the Times Educational Supplement. Responses were categorised independently by the two authors. The study emphasises the need for an improvement in the information given in view of the important management functions of both headteachers and departmental heads.
