A new method for assessing the compliance of superficial veins has been developed which depends on the estimation of the diameter of the vein at a standard congesting pressure by an optical technique. The method is reproducible and compares satisfactorily with a standard plethysmography technique; it is suitable for making repeated measurements of peripheral venous compliance in both normal subjects and seriously ill patients, and can also be employed in pharmacological studies.
