A physical mechanism for the enhancement effect in laser-enhanced arc welding (LEAW) is proposed. The minimum laser power for a CO 2 and a Nd:YAG laser is calculated in the case of Fe-, Al- and Cu-based welding materials. The results are compatible with the pertinent welding experiments.
