Various statistical and detailed studies of the relation between auroras and bays are presented. It appears that bays and auroras are manifestations of the same phenomenon. Numerical estimates are presented which indicate that the bay can be caused by atmospheric winds operating on ionized particles produced by incoming 50-kev solar protons. It is not necessary to postulate any dynamo action.
