The final purposes of studying ameboid movement, so far as the present author understands it, are to know what chemical processes underly it, and how the physical aspects of such movement can be elucidated. Continued observation of various amebae and a review of the published literature have gradually led him to conclude that the problem cannot be puzzled out with out first establishing the morphological and physiological organization of amebae, aspects upon which the majority of former investigators have failed to lay adequate stress. Too much consideration has been given to the gra nular flow and its mechanism, and too little attention has been paid to the everchanging organization of the body or its ectoplasm, the gelated structure.
