The thermoelectric power of silicon decreases precipitously when the dimensions of a microcontact are reduced below a critical value. The critical dimension L decreases with rising temperature T and is a measure for an interaction length of electron-phonon coupling. The dimensional reduction inhibits the phonon-drag contribution to the thermoelectric power; the predicted scaling with L^-1T^-4 is verified for the first time.
