This article is a response to Wanock's (1991) ‘Equality fifteen years on’ in which the educational difficulties children experience are compared to obstacles along a track. It is an attempt to address this metaphor, and that of territorial boundaries, within a postmodern analysis. Through such a process, the intention is to include fresh perspectives and alternative discourses within the debate on ‘special educational needs’. Deconstruction is proposed as a means of clearing the way for new voices to be heard.
