This report examines differentials in divorce rates in 10 Canadian provinces. A multiple regression analysis is employed to see how divorce rates and the seven indices of institutional-structural characteristics of the nations 10 provinces are related. The Canadian data conform to findings from the United States. Provinces with higher population turnover are characterized by a lower degree of social integration and thus lower social cost attached to divorce which is reflected in higher divorce rates. The study also explores the hypothesis that divorce rates are higher in areas where more economic opportunities are available for women. (authors)
