A smoothing technique is developed to remove the oscillatory errors in initial nodal pore pressures, associated with the use of quadratic isoparametric elements to model soil consolidation. Numerical results using this technique are compared with the performance of other types of element in problems of one‐and two‐dimensional consolidation.
