Composite materials have been successfully used in rail applications, such as moulded profiles and panelling for cab ends and vehicle interiors. In future they are set to be exploited in more advanced structures such as bodyshells, bogies, wheelsets and even overhead cable gantries and track, say Mark Robinson and Joe Carruthers from the Advanced Railway Research Centre.
